Verizon Wireless is actively testing Apple tablets, a well-placed source has disclosed to the Boy Genius Report. Headquartered in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, Verizon is a provider of wireless services that owns and operates the largest mobile telecommunications network in the United States.

The BGR claims to have been told by this source that the model Verizon Wireless is testing is a CDMA-compatible device. Code division multiple access, or CDMA, is a channel access method employed by various radio communication technologies. CDMA is not to be mistaken for the mobile phone standards called cdmaOne and CDMA2000. These are often referred to as simply CDMA, and use CDMA as an underlying channel access method, according to Wikipedia.

Back to the BGR report, the tipster reportedly mentioned LTE “in some capacity,” but left the site unable to independently confirm this part. It is speculated that U.S. residents may see not only an iPhone, but also iPads on Verizon Wireless’ network in the nearby future. Apple sells two kinds of iPads, one of which is 3G-capable, in addition to offering Wi-Fi networking. The iPad Wi-Fi+3G uses a mini SIM card, which, currently, only AT&T provides for the iPad in the U.S.

In related news, Apple CEO Steve Jobs was questioned about AT&T’s network performance during the All Things D conference earlier this week. Steve Jobs said that the operator was doing “pretty good” in improving its network, but admitted that the exclusive US wireless carrier of the iPhone “could do better.” In fact, any carrier faced with having to support the iPhone would run into the same problems, Jobs stressed. Speaking of their choice of going with AT&T, the CEO added that Apple had found “a way to sell the phone that we wanted to sell and to define it the way we wanted to define it.”
