The game is still in Steam Early Access

20XX is a roguelike 2D platformer that's built in the spirit of Mega Man, but that offers multiplayer options, procedurally generated levels, and much more.

Just yesterday we wrote about the fact Mighty No. 9, the game that's supposed to be the spiritual successor Mega Man, was delayed, mostly because of various networking-related problems. It turns out that Mighty No. 9 is not the only spiritual successor to Mega Man, and there's a game out there that rivals it.

20XX is currently in Steam Early Access, and it was initially launched as a Kickstarter project named Echoes of Eridu. It proved a success, but since Echoes of Eridu doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, the name was changed to 20XX. The developer also took the game into Steam Early Access in November 2014, and it's now approaching the actually stable launch. The Beta version is quite advanced, and it seems to be playable right now.

20XX is what Mega Man would be with today's technology

It's clear that Inafune, the original illustrator for Mega Man, doesn't have the keys to this kind of design and games, and it seems that 20XX is a worthy successor.

"20XX is a co-op-friendly roguelike that plays like Mega Man X. Explore procedurally generated levels, collect new weapons and abilities, purchase upgrades, and battle mighty bosses in the name of saving the human race maybe!" developers explained in an email.

The makers of 20XX also said that they managed to keep the milestone promises and that they are targeting a 2016 launch. Moreover, since they are in direct competition with Mighty No. 9, they decided to give the game at a discount during the missed launched window for Mighty No. 9. Talk about marketing.

We hope to be able to cover this game in much greater detail soon, and we'll have a proper preview of the Beta next week.
