The Snapdragon Mobile Development Platform for Android, a development platform based on Qualcomm’s dual-core MSM8660 Snapdragon processor running speeds of up to 1.5 GHz has just been made publicly available on the market.

The newest 1.5GHz dual-core MSM8660 Snapdragon processor manufactured by Qualcomm made its way onto BSQUARE's Mobile Development Platform (MDP).   The MDP is an Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread smartphone that targets developers who want to test and optimize their apps on Qualcomm’s new dual-core MSM8660 chipset and Adreno 220 GPU (graphics processing unit).

This is not the first collaboration between BSQUARE and Qualcomm, as the former has previously provided customers with the first-generation Snapdragon MDP, based on Qualcomm's MSM8655 processor, back in December 2010.

However, the new generation Snapdragon MDP, based on the MSM8660 processor, introduces new features, including a dual-core CPU that supports asynchronous architecture and stereoscopic 3D graphics performance.

The need to accelerate development of high-quality Android applications continues to grow along with the size of the Android market,” said John Traynor, vice president of products for BSQUARE.

The MSM8660-based Snapdragon MDP, with a dual core CPU and Adreno 220 GPU, is one of the fastest development devices currently on the mobile market. When combined with BSQUARE support and services, the MSM8660-based Snapdragon MDP, along with the MSM8655- based Snapdragon MDP, will be key drivers in helping to accelerate the development of innovative applications.”

Specs-wise, the MSM8660-based Snapdragon MDP features an average size 3.61-inch WVGA multi-touch touchscreen display, asynchronous dual-core CPUs running independently at up to 1.5 GHz, Adreno 220 GPU, a 13-megapixel main photo snapper, a secondary 1-megapixel front-facing camera, 1GB of RAM, as well as 16GB of storage memory.

According to BSQUARE, developers will be provided with several tools meant to help them optimize their applications for this new generation of Snapdragon platform, including the Adreno Profiler for optimizing 3D graphics performance and the Trepn Profiler for optimizing application power usage.
