Only the unlocked models are eligible for the update

The HTC One A9 is a mid-range smartphone that made its debut on the market back in November 2015. One year and a half after its release, the One A9 is still running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, but since it's a mid-range handset it kind of makes sense.

HTC has already started to release the Android 7.0 Nougat update for some of its smartphones, including last year's flagship, the HTC 10. Even though the HTC 10 Nougat update has been temporarily put on hold, the device will eventually get it by the end of February.

But there's good news for HTC One A9 owners as well. The company's VP for HTC US, Mo Versi, has just confirmed that the smartphone is now eligible for the highly-anticipated Android 7.0 Nougat update.

According to him, HTC has already received technical approval to release the Android 7.0 Nougat update to One A9 units in the United States. The rollout will begin today, January 16, but it will only be available for unlocked versions of the smartphone.

We expect HTC to continue to deploy the Android 7.0 Nougat update to One A9 devices in other countries and regions as well, including Europe and Asia.

The One A9 would be the third HTC smartphone to receive Android 7.0 Nougat update, after HTC 10 and HTC One M9. However, the Taiwanese company won't stop here, so we expect more updates like this to arrive in the coming weeks.

Now that HTC has already unveiled its flagship smartphone for the first half of the year, the U Ultra, it can start focusing on delivering Android 7.0 Nougat updates to other handsets in its portfolio.

It remains to be seen which phone HTC will choose to include on its Android 7.0 Nougat update roadmap, so stay tuned for more on the matter.
