As expected, Google has just announced that a new Android 7.1.1 Nougat update that contains the January security patch. The search giant has also confirmed the update is now pushed OTA (over the air) to all compatible Nexus and Pixel devices.

However, the factory images for all devices have already been released, so if you don't want to wait for the OTA, you can download and flash the corresponding factory image on your phone.

The January security update is available for the following devices: Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus Player, Nexus 9 (Wi-Fi), Pixel, Pixel XL, and Pixel C. You can download the factory images directly from Google's developers site.

We reported a few days ago about LG being the first to publish the January security bulletin, which contained details about the changes included in the update.

Today, Google released its own security bulletin that lists all the vulnerabilities affecting Android devices patched in the January update. There are no less than 95 vulnerabilities patched in the update, but most of them aren't that major.

According to Google, the most severe of the issues patched in the update is a critical security vulnerability that could enable remote code execution on any affected device through multiple methods such as email, web browsing, and MMS when processing media files.

Google also confirmed that it did not receive any reports from Android users who have been abused through the use of these newly reported issues.

If you own a relatively new Android flagship smartphone, expect the new January security update to arrive on your device in the coming weeks, as Google has stated that all OEM partners have been notified of the issues described in the bulletin.

Don't avoid downloading and installing Google's security updates, as they are addressing major security issues discovered by third-party companies and Android users.
