On Wednesday, mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless announced a new addition to its mobile video offering for smartphone customers, namely BLOCKBUSTER On Demand presented by V CAST Video. According to the company, the new solution is set to offer access to a wide range of new releases from Blockbuster, and should first become on the new DROID X by Motorola.

BLOCKBUSTER On Demand has been developed specifically to benefit from the large screen the new Android-based device comes with. Through this application, users will benefit from access to some of the “hottest new release movies” available for download straight from day one, in addition to Blu-ray and DVD releases. Those who will purchase a DROID X should be able to either rent or buy titles to view them directly on their smartphones.

“Movies and other video content look tremendous on DROID X, which has the screen, resolution and size to make it like nothing we’ve ever seen before on smartphones,” said John Stratton, chief marketing officer at Verizon Wireless. “Right out of the box, DROID X customers will be the first to experience the hundreds of movies that will be available through the Blockbuster app.”

BLOCKBUSTER On Demand presented by V CAST Video offers a simple solution for those interested in movies and television shows. Once the user has located on the application tab on DROID X, he/she can browse and search for titles via Verizon's 3G network. Moreover, the app enables users to sign up for a Blockbuster account straight from their device, though downloading content would require for a Wi-Fi connection, the wireless carrier announced.

“We are thrilled to expand our digital presence with this new app on DROID X. With our unique multi-channel capability to offer DVDs in store, by mail and via kiosks, and with a world-class digital offering in BLOCKBUSTER On Demand that is gaining momentum, our customers have even more convenient ways to access entertainment content from Blockbuster,” said Jim Keyes, chairman and chief executive officer, Blockbuster Inc. “Our customers have come to expect these types of innovations and immediate access to the latest hit movies. As the leading provider of entertainment, Blockbuster is uniquely able to offer customers access to the most popular titles where they are – through smartphones, such as DROID X, at the supermarket on their way home, in one of our neighborhood stores or through DVDs by mail – as only we can.”

Users will be able to purchase movies for $9.99, or to rent them for $3.99 each. Rented or purchased movies can be watched not only on the DROID X by Motorola, but also on any Blockbuster-enabled device. Once a title has been rented, one would have the possibility to view it within 30 days of rental, with a 24-hour viewing period as soon as the movie has been played for the first time. Purchased movies can be played on multiple devices and screens.
