Touted as the future of computing a while ago, thin clients failed to capture the market recognition they deserved, but this hasn't stopped VXL from expanding its Xentrix product family, which is designed to be compatible with the Citrix environment, with the mid-range Xentrix 1512-z and high performance D12s-z thin clients.

Both of these units are compatible with a wide range of industry standard protocols, including Citrix HDX, and feature low power consumption, as the high-end D12s-z requires only 10.3W to operate.

This is powered by a fanless VIA C7 1.6GHz processor that is paired together with a VIA VX800 northbridge and 1GB of memory and is capable of supporting displays with resolutions up to 1920x1600.

Furthermore, the unit also packs no less than six USB 2.0 ports, one VGA and one DVI-D video outputs, a pair of serial ports as well as a Gigabit Ethernet port and an optional internal smart card reader.

Moving to its smaller brother, the Xentrix 1512-z, this is powered by a VIA C7-M processor paired with a VIA VX855 northbridge and 1GB of RAM and sports a power consumption of just 7W.

Just like the previous unit, the 1512-z also provides a Gigabit Ethernet port, but its DVI-I video output is limited at 1920x1440 resolution and doesn't feature as many expansion ports as the Xentrix high-end model.

“The new Xentrix desktops represent the perfect partner for Citrix users with all the benefits of accessing XenDesktop and XenApp,” said Frank Noon, VXL’s VP of Worldwide Sales.

“What’s more both models benefit from fast processing speeds and work exactly as Citrix intended.

“It’s the extensive local rendering capabilities that makes this possible, plus there’s the added bonus of managing the desktops through our XLmanage software,” concluded the company's rep.
