The Uncharted franchise developed by studio Naughty Dog hasn't been built as a trilogy, unlike many series of games these days, as the company's boss, Evan Wells, believes protagonist Nathan Drake is better suited to episodic adventures.

The Uncharted series is by far one of the most popular PlayStation 3 exclusive franchises, with Naughty Dog already unleashing two critically acclaimed games, while preparing a third one for release later this year.

But while other series like Gears of War, Mass Effect or Halo are built as trilogies right from the beginning, the developer of Uncharted isn't worried about weaving an epic narrative throughout its regular releases.

"Every single episode is a standalone adventure," Wells told CVG. "We full like we can keep putting him in these scenarios that are self-contained that anyone can pick up and play, but if you have played them and know the characters and storylines it can be an even more rewarding experience. I don't see why we wouldn't keep going and making more of those adventures as long we've got the ideas."

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves introduced us to the main characters of the series, including leading man Nathan Drake, his longtime partner Victor Sullivan and his love interest, Elena Fisher, while the upcoming game, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, is set to thoroughly explore the relationship between Drake and Sullivan, as well as the protagonist's motivations in regards to seeking out treasures and adventures all over the world.

Wells also shared his thoughts on the recent Tomb Raider reboot, coming from his ex-studio, Crystal Dynamics, which seems to be borrowing heavily from the Uncharted series.

"It's exciting," Wells said of Lara's comeback. "I've not seen the demo but I saw that CG trailer that went out a couple of nights ago and that was fantastic. They executed it unbelievably well and I'm really excited about that game."

Seeing as how both Lara Croft, the heroine of Tomb Raider, and Nathan Drake, from Uncharted, both deal with treasure hunting, many believed a crossover would appear, but Wells is pretty convinced that it won't happen officially just yet.
