The Gears of War franchise, one of the most important Xbox 360 exclusive series out there, can certainly see more stories in its universe after the end of its planned trilogy with the release of Gears of War 3 later this year.

Epic Games, the developer of the Gears of War franchise, has been adamant that its series is a planned trilogy, which will see its story end with the launch of Gears of War 3 this September.

According to Epic Games President, Mike Capps, the future of the franchise has yet to be decided, but the series has enough space to accommodate other stories.

“So it is definitely a trilogy and the story is a trilogy; I think people will get that experience when they reach the end. I don't want gamers to feel cheated. At the same time, I've worked on the comics, we've got the novels... there's a ton of stories in this universe.

“There's certainly more space to tell a different story if we wanted to," he said. "We don't have an exact plan for 'here's what we're doing next' but I think we'll wait and see and maybe give folks a little rest for a while.”

The Gears of War franchise has already seen a comic book series as well as three novels that are considered canon material depicting some of the events that happened between the three games.

A movie was also planned, but the project hasn't received any type of details for quite some time.

Epic isn't betting just on the Gears of War franchise, however, as Capps confirmed that the company is always looking at new IPs.

"Yes, we're always thinking of doing that. Bulletstorm, Shadow Complex and Infinity Blade are the ones we've done recently," he said.

All these games came from external teams, specifically People Can Fly and Chair Entertainment, as Capps highlights that Epic is still a small company and its own team can't create multiple projects with such a huge game like Gears of War 3 still in development.

The newest Gears of War game will see a multiplayer beta kick off on April 18 and will be formally launched on September 20, exclusively for the Xbox 360.
