Sledgehammer will have creative freedom after Modern Warfare 3

Before Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was officially confirmed there were rumors that another project, third person and somewhat different, was set to be launched first by Activision, with Sledgehammer Games handling the development.

Now speaking to CVG Glen Schofield, who is the leader of Sledgehammer Games, has said, “We’ll probably cancel it. They gave us the choice of: do you want to work on Modern Warfare 3, or do you want to continue working on this? And we really liked that.”

He added, “We liked what we were doing. It third person, probably set at a time that might have niched it too much. I bet that if we had kept going, within a month or two I probably would have switched the time period, but kept the gameplay. It had some really cool stuff.”

Schofield has said that after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is shipped Sledgehammer would be again allowed to work on video games on its own, saying that there's a team of more than 100 people currently employed, enough to create a title from the ground up.

The developer says that it's not clear whether their new project will be linked to Call of Duty or not but that the team will have the freedom to pursue unconventional approaches to familiar genres.

He did not elaborate why this new found freedom will not allow for the third person Call of Duty game to be completed and shipped.

At the moment publisher Activision has three studios apart from Sledgehammer working on Call of Duty: Infinity Ward, Treyarch and Beachhead.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be launched on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 on November 8 and versions for more devices will arrive later.

The Elite subscription service will be released at the same time.
