Video game developer Sledgehammer Games has said that their project for a third-person shooter set in the Call of Duty universe was pretty far along in the development process before being canceled, but that the team is very happy with the work it has done on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Speaking to Gamespot, Glen Schofield, who is one of the co-founders of Sledgehammer Games, has said, “We came on board to make a third person action adventure game, in the Call of Duty franchise, and we were working on it about six months.”

Michael Condrey, the other leader of Sledgehammer, added that the project got as far as the prototype phase and that it looked pretty good but that working on Modern Warfare 3 was more important for the team.

Condrey added, “There’s a lot of people on the team who have worked on Call of Duty before, who have worked on first-person shooters before, so there’s a lot of built-in knowledge about the first-person shooter genre and a lot of passionate gamers. Some guys on the floor are tenth level prestige in Black Ops.”

Sledgehammer Games is made up of veterans from the team that created the original Dead Space video game for publisher Electronic Arts.

It's not clear whether the third-person Call of Duty game they were working on is no longer interesting to Activision Blizzard or whether it might be revived at some point in the future.

The developers have not announced what they will be working on after the launch of Modern Warfare 3 and whether they will have the freedom to create a new intellectual property.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will launch on November 4 and will be playable on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PC and it will come alongside the new Elite multiplayer service.
