Shapify may have made it possible to order a 3D printed selfie just by owning a Kinect, but for newlyweds Emily and Carl Ogasthorp, the answer for a perfect wedding cake was a full-on 3D Scanning Turntable.
Then again, the turntable also used a Kinect, an X-box Kinect to be specific, for the scanner, while a motorized base spun the bride and groom around.
3D printing enthusiast Steven Dey then used the scans to make a 3D printed cake topper featuring the two facing one another.
So yes, it was all done at home, with a homemade scanner and home-assembled 3D printer (from Ultimaker).
According to the guests, the whole project was a smashing success, with the sugar cake toppers being instantly recognizable.
