We were promised a ‘PlayStation 3 exclusive we won’t believe’ before the start of the 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards, and the ceremony pretty much delivered, in the form of The Last of Us, a survival game coming from prestigious studio Naughty Dog, the developer of other hit franchises like Jak and Daxter or the more recent and much more popular Uncharted.

Naughty Dog has always taken its time with projects, usually focusing on just one thing at a time. Now, the studio has unveiled that it had a second team of developers working on a whole new project, while the original team focused on Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, which was released last month.

Now, this project has finally been revealed, in the form of The Last of Us, through a touching trailer.

The video, which you can enjoy below, is composed of in-game footage using its engine, according to the studio, and shows two characters, Joel, a fully grown man, and Ellie, a young, teenage girl, foraging for ammo in a post apocalyptic scenario while fending off zombie-like monsters.

"The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind. Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find,” Naughty Dog said about the project. “Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States."

While the whole experience will remind people of movies like I Am Legend, or games like the recent Dead Island, it’s going to be interesting to see just what a studio like Naughty Dog can do to make The Last of Us truly stand out.

No word yet on when the game might be released, so stay tuned for more details in the near future. Until then, check out the trailer below.
