On the 13th of January, a day that would bring bad luck to others – but not to Taylor Swift – the singer dropped the official video for her emotional breakup ballad “Back to December,” off “Speak Now.”

As MTV News also notes, the video is a definite departure from the image of Taylor we may have: she’s now longer the cheerful girl that sings about girlie stuff, this is her at the most serious.

The clip shows a very upset – but no less gorgeous because of it – Taylor feeling sorry about breaking the heart of her gorgeous boyfriend who, at the same time, is shown walking the streets of a deserted town.

As memories become harder and harder to bear, and as snow slowly fills every room she’s in, be it bathroom, kitchen or bedroom, Taylor sets herself to write a letter to the boyfriend.

This note could be either a breakup note or just as well an apology, like the song itself. She puts it in the breast pocket of his jacket, and he, of course, finds it only at the end of the video, when it’s already too late.

“What happens when you break the heart of a hunky-looking dude who resembles a ‘Twilight’ character and you regret it?” MTV writes.

It is believed “Back to December” is Swift’s belated apology to Taylor Lautner whom she dated briefly and whose heart she broke.

“Well, if you’re Taylor Swift, it snows in your straight-out-of-an-Anthropologie-catalog bedroom as you write a breakup letter for your ex-beau. That’s the basic plot for Taylor Swift’s just-released ‘Back to December’ video,” MTV further says.

While oversimplification could work here, the video remains Taylor’s most somber to date – and her sultriest too, because of the bathtub scene and the overall feel of it.

“The video was directed by Yoann Lemoine, who did Katy Perry’s equally dreamy, equally girly clip for ‘Teenage Dream’,” MTV reports.
