Mobile phone carrier Sprint has just confirmed that the Motorola XOOM tablet PC, the very first device in the world to run under the new Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, would arrive on its shelves on May 8th, with a price tag of $599.99 attached to it.

The new device sports a 10.1-inch widescreen HD display, along with a 1GHz dual-core processor, being capable of providing users with an impressive experience while on the go.

The Motorola XOOM is set to land on Sprint's shelves only with WiFi connectivity capabilities inside, although a 3G-enabled version is already for sale in the United States.

“Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi is the first device to feature Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), 10.1-inch widescreen HD display and a 1GHz dual-core processor, making it a powerful e-reader, media player, portable computing device and so much more,” the carrier notes on its website.

“The Android 3.0 platform is the next generation of Android, designed specifically for tablets, showcasing the latest innovations in widgets, multi-tasking, Web browsing, notifications and customization.”

In addition to the large touchscreen display and the fast application processor, the new Motorola XOOM also arrives on shelves with a rear-facing 5-megapixel photo snapper with HD video recording capabilities, and with a front-facing 2-megapixel camera for video chat in Google Talk.

The tablet PC sports 32GB of internal memory, WiFI and Bluetooth connectivity capabilities, 3.5mm headphone jack, USB port, and HDMI port to display HD content on any HDMI-equipped HDTV (HDMI cable sold separately).

“With its large touchscreen display, Motorola XOOM makes it easy to stay connected from anywhere using personal and Exchange corporate email. It also offers access to more than 3 million Google eBooks and apps from Android Market, making it an ideal e-reader,” Sprint notes.

Motorola XOOM sports support for Google Mobile services, including Google Maps 5.0 with 3D interaction, as well as tabbed Web browsing, Adobe Flash Player 10.2 (downloadable from Android Market), Google Chrome bookmark sync and incognito mode, and more.

Beginning Sunday, May 8th, 2011, Sprint customers would be able to purchase the Motorola XOOM for $599.99 through Sprint Direct Ship sales channels, including Sprint Stores, Web sales, Telesales and Sprint Business Sales.
