Unchallenged in the portable media player market, Apple's iPod Touch is set to receive a pretty strong competitor over at CES 2011, as Samsung has just announced they will showcase an Android-powered PMP called the Galaxy Player, featuring almost the same hardware as the Galaxy S smartphone.

Compared to the previously launched Galaxy Player 50, this new PMP shares almost all its hardware platform with the Galaxy S (sans the cellular connectivity), although, the Korean company choose to drop the Super AMOLED screen that made the smartphone (and all its derivatives) famous in favor of a 4-inch Super Clear LCD display.

Codenamed the YP-GB1, the PMP gets the same Hummingbird 1GHz processors and PowerVR SGX540 graphics unit as the company's Galaxy S smartphone.

Combined with the Android 2.2 operating system, this should prove to be pretty snappy in most usage scenarios (be they gaming or just web browsing).

The rest of the specs list is also shared between the Galaxy S and the YP-GB, as the player features Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, GPS, HD video playback, a microSD card slot as well as Android Market and Samsung Apps access.

The YP-GB1 also uses a dual camera setup (one in the front and one in the back), but, this time, Samsung has decided to go with a lower resolution rear snapper that can take pictures at 3.2MP.

Furthermore, the battery capacity was reduced, from 1500mAh to 1200mAh, although there is a strong chance this can be swapped with a higher-rated power source since Samsung went with a removable battery pack when designing the Galaxy Player.

As is the case with the Galaxy S, the YP-GB1 is also DLNA and DivX certified.

These are all the details available for now, but the Samsung Hub website reports that, next to the YP-GB1, the Korean company will also showcase another two Android-based PMPs during CES 2011, the already released YP-G50 and the recently certified YP-G70.
