Although the Android operating system has been mostly used as the platform of choice for smartphones and Internet tablets up until now, its overall potential for powering numerous other devices is much higher, and Samsung proves exactly that by apparently working on new portable media player (PMP) powered by the latest Android iteration, Froyo (version 2.2).

Of course, the fact that Samsung's actively involved in the development of Android-based PMPs is not exactly a big secret, since the Korean company already outed back at IFA another model, the Samsung Galaxy Player YP-G50, but it's quite nice to see that they're actively pursuing this product line.

Anyway, as the SamsungHub reports, it seems that the company's managed to leak some info regarding an upcoming Android player, also pertaining to the Galaxy family, called the YP-GB1, but unfortunately, we're talking about some bits and pieces of info, that don't provide little to no serious information regarding the device's capabilities.

So, since the leak regarding this device comes via a certification from DLNA and DivX, it's quite clear that Samsung's Allshare DLNA servie will be supported, as well as 720p video playback, which is certainly a plus, especially since we're talking about a multimedia playback-dedicated device.

Additionally, the same source reveals the fact that the YP-GB1 will also pack a camera module, which is no surprise, at least according to today's standards (after all, what's the point of having a high-end PMP that will undoubtedly pack a Super AMOLED display if you can't take high-quality photos and shoot videos with it?).

Unfortunately, that's all the info available on the future YP-GB1 Samsung Galaxy PMP for the time being, but we certainly hope to find out more on the future, as the official release date approaches (and we're pretty sure that we'll see this thing outed by CES 2011, or exactly on that occasion).
