While NVIDIA is about to release its GeForce GTX 580, other companies have no problems with launching devices of their own, and Samsung seems to have done just that with the S2 line of storage units.

While the market is eagerly waiting for NVIDIA to break the silence and officially release the GeForce GTX 580 card, other companies are making announcements of their own.

This once, however, the news is not about Gigabyte or PNY launching their boards ahead of time, nor is it about Maingear or CyberPower offering the card as part of their computers.

The development in question, this once, is more or less unrelated to these events, and comes courtesy of Samsung Electronics.

Apparently, Samsung has sent out a collection of portable hard disk drives to the European market, a collection that has otherwise been in circulation for a while already.

The series here dealt with is known by the name of S2, is made up of portable, compact hard disks and was originally introduced back in September.

All of its members have distinct capacities, the range including 500 GB, 640 GB and 1 TB.

Their main asset is the support for the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface standard, which has a maximum transfer rate of 5 Gbps, ten times faster than USB 2.0..

This advantage is complemented by the rotary speed of 7,200 RPM (rotations per minute) and supplemented by the Dynamic Balancing, SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies.

Furthermore, for maximum mobility, all Samsung S2 drives use the 2.5-inch form factor.

The drives have enclosures that are colored in either Metal Grey or Piano Black, so that they may appeal to as wide a consumer base as possible.

All of them have three-year warranties and sell for 79 Euro (500 GB), 89 Euro (640 GB) and 125 Euro (1 TB).
