At the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Tecmo announced that it would be making its play for the third-person shooter market, with its PlayStation 3-exclusive Quantum Theory. The game makes use of the Unreal Engine 3 and showed right from the beginning a blatant similarity with Gears of War 2, Epic's hit that was set to be an Xbox 360 exclusive. But, somewhere in its evolution, someone decided that, if GoW2 was small enough to be released on just one platform,
Quantum Theory wasn't, so the decision to make the game a PS3 exclusive was scrapped, and now it will also be released on the Xbox 360.

As such, we will now be able to par the two games side by side, in perfect balance and, no matter how you think about it, things will end badly for Tecmo's look-a-like. During previous discussions regarding the game, Tecmo admitted that it took some inspiration for the title from Ninja Gaiden, but it's really strange how it forgot to mention GoW, since it had a lot more in common with the second one than with the first. True, some sword play will be featured in the game, but it will be scarce and it won't even be an actual playable feature.

Tecmo's Quantum Theory will take place in the aftermath of an apocalypse, where one very buff, violent, armed-to-the-teeth, macho soldier, not at all like Marcus, will face the alien menace. We say “an apocalypse” because there are just too many out there to be specific in any way.

Our brave, not-Marcus protagonist is named Syd and will be joined along the way by Filena, an AI-controlled, sword-wielding lass. The two will try to make their way to the top of the mysterious “Living Tower,” an ever-morphing structure suspected to be the one responsible for releasing the vile Erosion, the substance thought to be responsible for the Earth's predicament. For now, the game is set for a spring 2010 release.
