Faster than the original

Microsoft announces that Gears of War 2, the Xbox 360 exclusive shooter recently launched, has managed to sell more than 3 million copies. The title was launched on November 7, so it took a little longer than one month to reach these sales figures, a pretty impressive feat.

The original Gears of War, also exclusive to the Xbox 360, which launched in November 2006, managed to reach the 3 million barrier only after more than ten weeks of sales. Basically, this means that Gears of War 2 is selling twice as fast as the original game. Epic must be praying at the moment that Gears of War 3 will manage to sell 3 million units in just two weeks.

The news was unveiled by Mark Rein, who is the vice president of Epic Games. He told Eurogamer that “Microsoft confirmed to me this afternoon that Gears of War 2 sell-through surpassed 3 million units as of last week”. The game will probably contribute to the success of the console as Christmas approaches.

Gears of War 2 builds on the story of the original game by showing how the Gears are taking on the Locust threat by going into their own territory. Basically, Epic has taken everything good in the first game in the planned trilogy and improved on all the less than stellar elements, like the story and the character portrayal. The multiplayer that Epic crafted is also very well done, especially the Horde mode, which pits teams of human players against waves and waves of enemies determined to obliterate you.

Unfortunately, there have been quite a few problems reported regarding Gears of War 2. Players have been reporting glitches and even crashes of the Xbox 360. Epic must be working on a patch at the time of writing this article.
