PlayStation 3 is a Hungry Monster

Maybe we should get a backup generator to power the PS3

Not a long time ago, some hot rumors abut Sony's upcoming game console, the PS3, arose. Those rumors talked about some
overheating issues. Maybe there was a little bit of truth there, in spite of Sony's statements, denying any overheating problems.

An article on Slashdot gaming news site reveals that, apparently, the PlayStation 3 uses eight times as much electricity as the PlayStation 2, and twice the amount of "juice" needed to power an Xbox 360. It also surpasses a state-of-the-art PC with all the works when it comes to electricity consumptions.

To be more exact, you will need some 380 watts to power the PS3, while the PS2 required only 45 watts. Is it really the PS3 8 times better than the PS2? Not likely. Anyway, if we are to judge consoles by their electricity consumptions, we would have to state that the PlayStation 3 is more than twice better as the Xbox 360, because Microsoft's game console needs only 160 watts to run.

Some blame the high electricity consumptions issue of the PS3 on its processor, namely the Cell processor. This Cell processor is made up of a core, which is surrounded by several auxiliary processors. Maybe this is why the PS3 needs that kind of juice.
