The PSP2, Sony's upcoming new portable device, is as powerful as the PlayStation 3, the company's current home console, fact confirmed by development studio Codemasters.

Lately, a lot of rumors about the PSP2 have been floating around on the web, with the most important ones saying that the new portable device is as powerful as the PlayStation 3, and can produce high quality graphics on its small screen, one that might use OLED technology.

Quite a few development studios and third-party publishers have already expressed their views on the new handheld, but Codemasters has been the most forthcoming.

According to studio CEO Rod Cousens, the PSP2 is, in fact, as powerful as the PlayStation 3, which has been speculated for quite a few months now.

"In portable areas, you're going to have statements, which are already out in the press, saying PlayStation Portable 2 is as powerful as the PS3 - which is true," he said during a chat with Eurogamer last week.

Cousens then elaborated on portable gaming in general, saying that "we're at the tip of the iceberg" in terms of potential.

"So you're going to get mobile devices as powerful as what were considered notebooks. I just think it gets bigger," added Cousens.

Codemasters is also pretty excited about the Nintendo 3DS, another big portable device that will be launched this year.

"I think it's going to be absolutely enormous and open software opportunities for the creative process," he said.

While the Nintendo 3DS has been confirmed for launch in February and March of this year, the PlayStation Portable 2 is still unconfirmed, as Sony is keeping a lid on things until its official press conference later this week, on January 27.

If the rumors are true, the PSP2 will be presented to the world this week and hit the market at the end of the year, just in time for the holiday season.
