It's good to be bad once more

Video games have followed a fairly stereotypical recipe when it came to the story they were based upon. You are usually a good guy who is faced with an impending doom, courtesy of local evil forces like a diabolical mastermind, an evil virus or even aliens.

But the team from Codemasters and Triumph Studios decided to change that, and with their Overlord title managed to offer a unique insight into the adventures of an evil, what else, Overlord and his army of minions that he ruled in order to rebuild his once mighty empire.

Now, as the publisher of the game, Codemasters, already announced that three more titles bearing the Overlord brand would arrive in summer, we can find out the details about the direct sequel to the first game, Overlord II. You can check out the two other games, the DS exclusive Overlord Minions and the Wii title Overlord Dark Legend, in order to see which one to purchase for the consoles you own.

Overlord II tells the story of a new evil ruler, which needs to conquer the seemingly peaceful and good Empire. But everything isn't as it seems, as the rulers of the Empire are greedy and corrupt, and people will gladly follow the Overlord and his minion horde if it means getting rid of the current leaders. Players will be able to choose how evil they can be, as they will either enslave the population from different regions of the Empire, or rightly destroy the towns and pillage everything for their own good.

“Overlord II empowers players to enact their evil will in either a dominating or destructive way,” explains Lennart Sas, creative director, Triumph Studios. “Play as a ‘dominating’ Overlord and villages and people will fall under your command with rewards and benefits coming over time as you have them do your bidding. Follow a 'destructive' route and you’ll become a demonic Lord of chaos, obliterating anything that stands in your way. For example, if you need to take a boat from one area to the next, are you evil enough to trigger global warming, melt the ice caps, so that you create your own private sea to sail across? Well, are you? It’ll be fun finding out.”

The game promises to deliver a new and improved experience, as opposed to the first title, and features new spells and minion-specific changes, like the fact that they can now mount different animals and be more effective in fights against the enemies of the Overlord. Here are a couple of screenshots from the game that will arrive in June on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and which promises to put laughter into slaughter.
