Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless is getting ready to release on its airwaves the first handset powered by Google's Android operating system, the Motorola DROID, but it seems that it won't stop here. Some of the previous reports on the carrier's plans already showed that it intends to deliver multiple Droid handsets to users, and one of them should be the HTC Eris.

Previously known as the HTC Desire, the HTC Droid Eris is said to come to the market with the Android 1.5 (Cupcake) flavor of the platform, and not with the Android 2.0 (Eclair) variant that will be present with the Motorola DROID. Hopefully, the rumors on this one will not pan out, and the phone will come at least with the Android 1.6 (Donut) version of Google's mobile platform.

In addition to the OS version, the rumored details on the handset also point towards a 528 MHz processor, which is not that bad after all. Plus, the phone seems also set to come around with a 5-megapixel photo snapper with video recording capabilities, Wi-Fi connectivity options, with an attractive touchscreen display, proximity sensor, and dedicated volume keys on the side.

The Motorola DROID has been announced to come to the market as soon as November 6 and the HTC Droid Eris was also previously rumored to make an appearance on Verizon's offering that day, yet nothing official has emerged until now. Unofficially, the device is expected to be priced at $99 upon the signing of a two-year contract agreement with Big Red, which sounds like a good price for such a device (half of what Motorola DROID will cost).

Take a look at the new images with the HTC Droid Eris, which surfaced on the web via phone Arena, to make an idea on what it will look like when launched. Verizon Wireless has been said to soon release an entire army of Droids on its airwaves, and the HTC Droid Eris is expected to be the second, following Motorola DROID's launch, so stay tuned to learn more on it.
