Headed for Verizon

Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless is ramping up for the launch of its first handset running under Google's Android operating system, the Motorola Droid, and it seems that the operator has some big plans for the OS in the near future. Following the launch of Droid, Big Red is expected to add to its offering another Motorola phone with Android on board, the Motorola Calgary.

Those of you who have been watching the news on Android and Motorola might already know what Calgary is. Back in April, this phone was said to be the first Moto Android device to come to Verizon, and now the rumors point at it as the second such handset, though it seems that there are no details on its exact release date or pricing at the moment.

However, BGR brought up some info on the mobile phone, including the fact that it will feature Motorola’s MOTOBLUR user interface, and will have three touch-sensitive Android keys on the screen, an optical joystick, a sliding QWERTY keyboard, a 3.5mm headset jack, 3-megapixel photo snapper, built-in GPS receiver, Wi-Fi, digital magnetometer, and a microSD memory card slot for additional storage space.

All in all, the Motorola Calgary seems to be a very decent phone, and Verizon's subscribers will have the chance to go not only for a high-end Android device like the Motorola Droid, but for a more affordable one too. BGR says that there are great chances for the third Motorola Android phone (following Cliq and Droid) to be launched in the fourth quarter of this year, so keep your fingers crossed.

Until more specific details on this Android device become available, you might want to take a look at the photos available with the phone, which can be compared with the ones that leaked about half a year ago. The device indeed looks nice, although not as appealing as the Motorola Droid.
