Although not very popular in Europe and in the rest of the world, the American football is nothing short of a religion in the United States, and one of its biggest “preachers” was footballing legend and famous commentator John Madden.

His fame was so impressive that Electronic Arts decided to accompany his name with its hugely success NFL sports game, thus creating Madden NFL, a franchise that is a true phenomenon and an endless money maker for the big corporation.

Now, Madden has just announced that, at the ripe old age of 72, he will retire from the public spotlight and from broadcasting. But this doesn't mean the end of the football simulator franchise, as Madden will still collaborate with the EA Sports team in order to deliver to fans the most realistic experience on the gridiron.

“It’s tough, not because I’m not sure it’s the right time,” John Madden said when he announced his retirement. “I mean, I really feel strongly that this is the right time – but I’m just going to miss everything about it because, you know, I enjoyed it so much.”

Here's what EA Sports President Peter Moore had to say about this: “John is a true sports icon who has made an indelible impact on the sport of football which will be felt forever. His prolific coaching and broadcasting careers, as well as his distinct role in shaping the EA Sports football experience have redefined how multiple generations have come to know and love the sport with unrivaled passion. We’re excited to see his legacy live on in the 21st year of Madden NFL football, and well beyond. It’s been a privilege for EA Sports to have had the strong relationship we’ve had with John for more than two decades and one that will continue into the future.”

John Madden really helped shape the football simulator, which is now one of the most popular franchises in the world. Hopefully, he will still provide his lifelong expertise in order to make it even better in the years to come.
