Medal of Honor is a new first person shooter published by Electronic Arts, with its Los Angeles studio handling the single player portion of the game and DICE developing the multiplayer. The game is set as a direct competitor to the new Call of Duty from Treyarch and Activision.

I had two good looks at the new Medal of Honor at Gamescom, first a hands off demo seen at the Sony press conference and then some hands on time with the multiplayer modes on the show floor.

[ADMARk=1]Sony showed off a level featuring a pair of helicopter that are tasked with taking out a militant base somewhere high up in the mountains of Afghanistan.

The pace was pretty hectic, with insurgents firing RPGs at the attacking United States forces seemingly from every rooftop and the two choppers diving to the left and to the right while using rockets and machineguns to thin out the enemy ranks.

It will be interesting to see how EALA manages to tie this kind of mission into the narrative of the game and how much the developers are focusing on delivering scenarios that do not fall in line with the usual shoot your way to the objective structure of similar titles.

The multiplayer has DICE's fingerprints all over it even if it is seems smaller and more focused than what they delivered in Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

The map I played was covered in white snow and littered with boulders, making spotting a target hard at time.

There were quite a bit of customization options linked to the classes the player can choose from and the weapons he carries and they all have a role on the field of battle.

I managed to get myself killed more than once by sprinting recklessly over open ground, mostly by players who were a little higher than me and cleverly hidden in the scenery, which might points to a slower more tactical experience than that of, say, Modern Warfare 2.

The new Medal of Honor is set to arrive on October 12 on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
