HTC Desire S, one of the latest Android-based smartphones that HTC Corporation announced officially last week during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, is set to make an appearance on the market in Australia via wireless carrier Telstra.

The wireless operator already officially announced plans to carry the smartphone during the ongoing year, but did not confirm a specific release date for it.

Last year, the company brought to its shelves the predecessor of Desire S, the HTC Desire, and the release of the new smartphone is something that many might have been expecting for.

“Unveiled overnight at the Mobile World Congress, the Desire S will be available exclusively on Telstra’s Next G network when it arrives in Australia in the first half of this year,” the wireless carrier announced.

“It will feature the latest Android Gingerbread operating system as well as a powerful processor that makes for fast, responsive multitasking,” the company continues.

The specifications list of this handset includes a 3.7-inch touchscreen display, complemented by a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon application processor, or 1.1GB of internal memory.

The smartphone also packs a 5 megapixel camera with power LED flash and HD video recording capabilities, support for HSDPA 14.4 Mbps connectivity, as well as WiFi, Bluetooth, USB port, and more.

“It promises to provide snappy web-browsing too with a mobile chipset capable of faster mobile Internet speeds on the Next G network,” the carrier notes.

The HTC Desire S includes support for services like Google Mail, Google search, YouTube, Google Calendar and Google Maps, as well as for applications available for download via the Android Market.

“HTC will craft the Desire S out of a single piece of aluminium — which makes for a really elegant, solid look and feel,” Telstra notes. Desire S measures 115 x 59.8 x 11.63 mm and weighs in at 130 grams.

No specific info on the release date or pricing of this smartphone was unveiled for the time being, but the wireless carriers promised additional details on the matter for the near future.
