The successor of the highly popular HTC Desire smartphone, which made its official debut a year ago, was officially unveiled to the world today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona as the HTC Desire S, and Softpedia's editors already had the chance to spend a few minutes with the device. Powered by Qualcomm’s new 1GHz Snapdragon MSM8255 processor, the HTC Desire S sports a unibody design, being sculpted out of a single block of aluminum, just as last year's HTC Legend mobile phone was.

“Inspired by the HTC Legend smartphone’s aluminum design, the HTC Desire S is sculpted out of a single block of aluminum making it feel solid and natural in your hand,” the leading handset vendor explains.

The handset sports the same 3.7-inch touchscreen display as the original (WVGA 480 x 800 resolution), while running under Google's Android platform, with HTC Sense on top.

The specifications list of the new mobile phone includes a 5 megapixel color camera with auto focus and power LED flash on the back, which also sports 720p HD video recording capabilities, as well as a VGA color fixed focus front camera for video calling.

Moreover, HTC paired the fast 1GHz processor with 768 MB of RAM, as well as with 1.1 GB of internal memory, and with a microSD memory card (SD 2.0 compatible) for expandable storage space.

Other specs of the new smartphone would include 3.5 mm stereo audio jack, micro-USB, Wi-Fi: IEEE 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, Internal GPS antenna, G-Sensor, Digital compass, Proximity sensor, or Ambient light sensor.

The new Desire S would offer support for HSPA/WCDMA Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz networks (up to 14.4 Mbps download speeds and up to 5.76 Mbps upload speeds).

HTC also notes that the new device would be able to provide users with a great multimedia experience, with video recording and playback features, support for various audio file formats, and a 1450 mAh Lithium-ion battery inside.
