Video game publisher Electronic Arts has announced that it will be delivering a big new update for the FIFA 11 Ultimate Team game mode on February 17, aimed at introducing two new main features to the game and at updating some of the gameplay mechanics.

The update will be available for download on both the PlayStation 3 from Sony and on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.

The first major update since the game mode was introduced will add a new “Play a Friend Challenge,” which is designed to allow players to play versus matches even when one of them is not actually online, with the CPU taking over.

The FIFA 11 Ultimate Team update also delivers Friends Leaderboards, allowing groups of gamers to see who has created the best team and who has the tactics to win matches and improve the value of his club.

FIFA 11 Ultimate Team is free to play and powered by micro transactions, allowing players to collect and use cards in order to create as close to perfect as possible football teams.

275 million in game coins have been spent in the in-game auction house as players tried to land their perfect player or a new tactic.

Electronic Arts says that 65 million game sessions have been played since the game was introduced, with 171 million card trades between players taking place.

Kaz Makita, an executive producer working on the FIFA franchise, stated, “We have a thriving global community of over two million fans playing FIFA 11 Ultimate Team.”

He added, “Our commitment to these fans is that we will continue to listen to their feedback to improve and enhance their experience year round. Play A Friend Challenge and Friends Leaderboards are both new innovations and features requested by the fans, and will enable players to better connect and compete with friends while playing FIFA 11 Ultimate Team.”
