The people developing Dropbox, the popular, cross-platform, sync & backup service, have updated the desktop client, bringing Dropbox to version 0.7.44. The new release is a maintenance update delivering fixes on both Mac OS X and Windows platforms.

The Dropbox service + application is cross-platform, meaning it works on both PC and Mac, as well as on Internet-capable portables. An iPhone client is also available now. Users install the software on any system, feed Dropbox some files, and see them synced across all their devices. Those files are instantly available to view, edit or do whatever one needs to do with them. If users delete a file on a device, the changes are reflected on the others.

You can have Dropbox working for you on as many systems as you wish, including your iPhone (web-based). The service is free for 2GB of storage. Your free space can be increased by telling friends about Dropbox. Paid plans are available as well, for 50GB of storage, or 100GB.

According to the release notes for Dropbox 0.7.44, the most recent changes include:

- fixes to the XP toolbar, dropbox toolbar button should now work in win2k as well; - potential fix for Snow Leopard toolbar button not having the dropbox image on it; - nicer tray icons for Windows in high dpi modes (also known as “bigger fonts” mode); - fixes to some minor bugs with status system that were introduced in 0.7.43; - more information about the windows shell extension; - fix to the problem where dropbox was preventing some Windows machines from going to sleep properly; - stability improvements.

A post on the Dropbox blog by Jon Ying also reveals that, “Dropbox works just fine with Snow Leopard! There have been some huge performance improvements and those ugly folder icons are now gone too.” “If you’ve upgraded, you shouldn’t notice many changes to the service. In fact, you probably won’t notice anything at all because Dropbox will auto-update itself within the next week and work properly on Snow Leopard without any problems. There’s no need to re-download it.”

But just in case you do need to download the software...
