PSP becoming an iPod replica?

Is this a Microsoft rip-off or could we call it a trend? After Microsoft launched a movie and TV series downloading service for the Xbox 360, here comes Sony with a similar service, except that this time, the PS3 is not involved, but the PSP is.

According to UK newspaper The Financial Times, this downloading service is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2007. Using this new service, you will be able to download video content on your PC and then transfer it onto your PSP.

This has caught the attention of some big websites such as Amazon, Movielink and CinemaNow, who apparently are currently in talks with Sony in order to take hold of this service. We are talking now about Sony Pictures Home Entertainment not about Sony Computer Entertainment. Maybe this service was planned because UMD video content sales were not as high as expected.

You are probably aware of how much space will a full movie take up. As the same report discloses that with the service a 4GB memory stick will be launched which can store up to ten feature length movies, I guess it's safe to say that the average length movie will take up some 400 MB of space.

If this goes through, it will be serious competition for the Xbox 360 movie downloading service and for Apple Computer's iPod related service. So far no other information is available, not even pricing, but be sure I will deliver it to you as soon as I get it.
