Verizon readies its launch on July 15

Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless is getting ready to release on its airwaves a new handset running under Google's Android operating system, the DROID X by Motorola. July 15 is the lucky day for enthusiasts, and it seems that the carrier already started shipping DROID X units to its retail stores around the United States.

Of course, this move should not come as a surprise for many, since Verizon was expected to make sure that all things are in order for the big launch. Some leaked shots of internal documents from the carrier (via Droid-Life) show that at least some of its retail locations are currently stacking up DROID X units. Since the wireless carrier has had some hard times keeping up with demand for the Android-based DROID Incredible, which is still shipping with great delays, concerns on the number of DROID X units each of the company's retail locations would have surfaced, fueled by the leaked info.

It seems that one authorized Verizon kiosk in Portland, OR, received 20 DROID X units, while a second location, a corporate store, received a few more, though still less than 30. One thing that is certain is that this small number of DROID X units being shipped to Verizon stores does not seem to be encouraging. Chances are that the initial stock would be sold pretty fast, and that users interested in the device would have to wait for at least a few days before new units arrive. On the other hand, chances are that Verizon took all the necessary precautions to have enough units available at least for the first few days of availability.

In related news, we learn that Motorola and Verizon have just released a new software update for the DROID X. This would be the second software update the phone receives in the last month, and it comes at 18MB, bringing the ROM on the device to version 1.13.604.en.US, up from 1.13.516. The mobile phone runs under the Android 2.1 operating system, and this platform would be on its at launch, but is expected to benefit from an Android 2.2 blessing in the near future.
