A new type of convergent mobile devices debuted today with the launch of Asus' new Padfone, a hybrid mobile machine that brings the world of smartphones and tablet PC a step closer.

The new mobile device was launched in an attempt to offer users the possibility to enjoy more features on their handsets while on the go.

The Padfone includes a smartphone and a tablet PC. The former can be placed inside the latter, so that users can enjoy a larger screen when performing certain activities.

“Innovation is at the heart of ASUS design and the new Padfone reveals exciting new possibilities for mobile computing and communication,” the leading computer maker notes.

“This convergent device combines a smartphone and a tablet computer into one symbiotic gadget that allows consumers to choose the screen size that best fits their activities while seamlessly sharing data and 3G Internet access.”

The company also notes that the new device would easily solve the problem of data transfer hassles, or that of having multiple SIM cards when it comes to smartphones and tablet PCs.

“The ASUS Padfone is a device that explores one possible convergence between two popular mobile devices - the smartphone and tablet,” Asus notes.

With the new Asus Padfone, the smartphone would be docked inside the tablet PC, which should result in offering an expanded view for performing certain tasks.

When docked, the phone would recharge from the larger batter inside the tablet PC. At the same time, the tablet would take advantage of the 3G Internet connection the phone comes with.

“The dual interfaces for both the pad and phone ensure an enhanced user experience as the layout is automatically adjusted for all activities such as video conferencing, web browsing and emailing,” Asus explains.

The Padfone certainly looks impressive, though it remains to be seen how well it would perform on the market when released, and what price tag it would feature when made available for purchase.
