Not long after the iPhone Dev Team updated its PwnageTool jailbreak app to support more iPhone and iPod touch devices under iPhone OS 3.1 (3.1.1 on iPod touch), blogger geohot announced a working jailbreak solution for the latest iPhone firmware – version 3.1.2. While PwnageTool 3.1.3 only supports iPhone OS 3.1 and doesn’t jailbreak third-generation iPod touches, geohot’s blackra1n can effectively jailbreak any device in 30 seconds, according to its maker. Softpedia does not condone jailbreaking.

“blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak,” geohot explains on his blog. “Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n. As far as donations go, they are much appreciated, but not until after blackra1n works for you. I never ask for donations before the tool is released,” geohot’s post reads.

“Warning 3g and 3gs unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock,” he adds. “Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team's offerings. Also blackra1n doesn't hacktivate.”

While geohot’s Purplera1n jailbreak & unlock solution was available for both Mac and Windows at the time iPhone OS 3.1 and iPhone 3GS were released, blackra1n is currently a Windows-only tool. The hacker may release a Mac version of the tool as well, although there is no word of a Mac OS X blackra1n just yet.
