Computer maker Acer took us by surprise last week, when it announced the launch of a nice range of new devices

running under Android, and the company has unveiled some more info on its plans for the mobile market only recently.

In an interview with All Things Digital, Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci confirmed the fact that Acer won't focus only on the release of Android-based devices, but that it is also considering the launch of handsets powered by Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 OS.

“Smartphones–we want them to become big. Today we are mainly Android, but we are also working on Windows Phone 7,” is what he stated on the matter.

Moreover, he stated that the new OS version from Microsoft would be capable to offer a great user experience, somehow in line with the capabilities that Android brings to handsets today.

“If we look at Windows Phone 7, today, I think we see the same opportunity you can see on Android in terms of customization,” Lanci reportedly stated.

Of course, the company's journey to the Android land won't resume only to smartphones. Acer is also focused on launching tablet PCs on the market, and we already saw two of them being officially announced.

While other companies rushed to the release of their Android slates, Acer was more interested in the experience these devices could offer, it seems, thus choosing to wait for the next Android versions before releasing its devices.

“We could have an Android tablet already with Froyo. We took the decision to wait for Honeycomb when it is available. I think it is going to be probably in Q1 (before we have an Android tablet). Now you can have Gingerbread on a tablet, but we are not convinced it is the right solution,” Lanci continued.

Currently, the company has some appealing Android-based devices available for purchase on the market, such as the Acer Liquid Metal, which was launched in Europe, and which is rumored to be on its way to Canada at Rogers, and in the United States via AT&T and T-Mobile.
