An interesting announcement has just been made on official Gears of War forums by Epic. It says
that a brand new multiplayer gametype, will be provided soon for Gears of War fans and... get ready to be knocked off your feet: IT'S FREE!, as Team Xbox reports.

The post reads: "The next title update for Gears of War is currently going through the certification process. We'll have more detail about the update next week but I can tell you that in addition to fixing a whole bunch of glitches, and providing 720p for VGA users running at 1280x1024, it will contain a brand new multiplayer gametype called Annex. Some folks who got to play it a few weeks ago said they think it is our best multiplayer gametype yet but I'll leave it for you fans to decide what you think for yourself when it shows up soon on Xbox Live. More details next week."

Team Xbox reckons that this new multiplayer gametype sounds like a territory based game mode, due to its name: Annex, but there's no official word on that yet. It also sounds like I'm sure that nobody even remembers this but in an interview with lead developer for Epic Games, Cliff Bleszinski said that three games were the primary influences in the game's design. Two of them were the third person perspective from Resident Evil 4 and the tactical cover system from kill.switch. I haven't seen much influence from the latter in Epic's third-person series, but maybe Annex is where it will kick in.
