Facebook's communities have become extremely important

We all know Mark Zuckerberg has big plans for the future, or else we wouldn't all be using Facebook now, a decade or so after he put it in his mind to turn the then-small internal social network into what it is today. Well, now, we can get a little insight into what he plans to do next in the world.

In a new manifesto counting close to 6,000 words, Mark Zuckerberg spills it out. He wants to help users build communities that are supportive, safe, civically engaged, informed and inclusive.

"The most important thing we at Facebook can do is develop the social infrastructure to give people the power to build a global community that works for all of us," he writes.

Stronger communities

As for his self-described top goals, Zuckerberg talks about his plans to invest more heavily in the Groups product in order to offer resources to users.

"For some of these problems, the Facebook community is in a unique position to help prevent harm, assist during a crisis, or come together to rebuild afterward. This is because of the amount of communication across our network, our ability to quickly reach people worldwide in an emergency, and the vast scale of people's intrinsic goodness aggregated across our community," Zuckerberg writes.

One example he gives is that Facebook can help build social infrastructure to help identify problems before they happen. When someone is thinking of committing suicide or hurting themselves, there's already an infrastructure in place to give their friends and community tools that could save their lives.

Similarly, when a child goes missing, Amber Alerts pop up, which has helped save many children without them being hurt. This is Zuckerberg's way of recognizing the importance of the Communities on Facebook and appreciating how they've grown over time, while also trying to keep a strong arm to lead them towards a nice development over time.
