ZTE has yet to launch its first Android Nougat smartphone, but the Chinese company is aware of the fact that, if it wants to remain competitive in the U.S. market, it must provide its customers with the latest version of Android as soon as possible.

That's probably the main reason ZTE announced that Axon 7 owners in the United States can now join an Android Nougat preview program by registering on its website.

Obviously, not all who sign up to take part in the beta program will be accepted, but ZTE shouldn't take too long to roll out the update to all Axon 7 owners in the country.

It's also worth noting that ZTE hasn't yet announced anything related to the Android Nougat update, so we still don't know what phones launched by the Chinese company in the past will be upgraded to the latest version of Android.

One thing is sure, though, ZTE will try and bring the update to those markets that matter most for its smartphone strategy, and it looks like the U.S. is the company's main choice for the moment.

Before signing up for the Android 7.0 Nougat Preview Program, you should know that you will need to create a ZTE US Community account, and then sign up on the official registration forum.

Apparently, ZTE already has an Android 7.0 Nougat beta build prepared for Axon 7 users, so if you get accepted into the program, then you could be able to download and install it on your phone.

Aside from the Axon 7, we're expecting a few more ZTE smartphones to be upgraded to Android 7.0 Nougat in the coming months, though we'd better not guess which ones until the Chinese handset maker confirms them.

In other news, ZTE plans to launch a mid-range smartphone powered by Android 7.0 Nougat. Such a device was recently spotted online as ZTE BV0800 and packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 505 processor, 3GB RAM and 32GB storage.
