Samsung is experimenting with new concepts all the time

Samsung amazed everyone last year at IFA 2014 when, alongside the Galaxy Note 4, it also unveiled the Galaxy Noto Edge, an atypical smartphone like anything the world has seen before, which came with an additional curved display on the side.

This experiment proved to be quite successful, so Samsung continued to make edgy smartphones, with the Galaxy S6 edge+ now being a day away from its official introduction to the world.

But the company might also be cooking up even more futuristic things. For example, we told you about Project Valley, or what could be Samsung’s first smartphone to arrive with a foldable display.

Now, a new batch of documents revealed by Patently Mobile reveals that Samsung could be working on a handset capable of projecting holograms or holographic icons enhancing the user experience.

Samsung is toying with the idea of holograms

Do you remember Lenovo’s futuristic projection phone which would beam out a virtual keyboard on any surface? Well, in theory, Samsung’s phone should work in a similar fashion, but it would project smaller icons and other such effects.

The experimental device would look like any other smartphone, with a separate entity like a light emission device, plus another piece of material that would be placed atop the display and used to project holographic images. The idea is pretty interesting, although it remains to be seen what real life applications such a phone would have.

Companies like Samsung are also experimenting with concepts and projects, so a patent is not really proof that the South Korean giant will indeed release such a handset in the near future. Sometimes such ideas do make it into real life products, like the fingerprint scanners, for instance, which became the norm nowadays.

Manufacturers are finding it increasingly difficult to come up with features that would differentiate their respective devices from the competition. And that’s why they restlessly need to experiment with new possibilities, as the one we’ve just detailed above.
