Xiaomi and Microsoft announced earlier this year an experimental program for Windows Phone fans who would like see the new version of the operating system installed on the Chinese company's current flagship smartphone, the Mi4.

It appears that the program was a success, since GSMDome reports that Xiaomi might launch a Windows Phone version of the Mi4 later this month.

According to a Microsoft Operating System Software Engineer Institute Director, a Xiaomi Mi4 handset running Windows 10 Mobile could be announced around Thanksgiving (November 28).

He has also published a picture of the smartphone running a preview build of Windows 10 Mobile, so there's no doubt that Xiaomi will announce something related to Mi4 and Windows Phone later this month.

Unfortunately, we don't have any additional details on the nature of the announcement, so Xiaomi might only release a final Windows 10 Mobile build that would be available for download to anyone who owns the Mi4.

A final Windows 10 Mobile build for Mi4 will certainly be released this month

However, if the Chinese company decides to launch another variant of the Xiaomi Mi4, this time powered by Windows 10 Mobile, then perhaps it will use a different name for the device.

Despite the fact that it's been available on the market for more than a year, the Mi4 is still Xiaomi's current flagship smartphone.

The company plans to announce its new top-tier handsets in the next couple of weeks, but Xiaomi Mi5 might not be available on the market until next year.

The Mi4 comes with decent enough specs for a mid-range smartphone, but can't compete with today's flagships.

The phone sports a 5-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display that supports full HD (1080p) resolution. It includes a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, an Adreno 330 graphics processing unit, and 3GB of RAM.

Xiaomi Mi4 packs a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus, LED flash, and 4K video recording, as well as a secondary, no less impressive 8-megapixel selfie camera on the front.
