Xiaomi is planning to release a successor to last year’s Mi MIX smartphone, which featured a high screen-to-body ratio and powerful specs. The company already announced that it started working on the new phone and some details have recently surfaced.

The company will launch the Xiaomi Mi MIX II in the second half of this year, according to a report. The smartphone will be developed in partnership with renowned French designer Philip Starck, the same designer who created the original Mi MIX.

The report reveals that Xiaomi Mi MIX II could come with the in-display fingerprint technology that Chinese company Goodix showcased during MWC 2017. The technology allows developers to place the fingerprint sensor right below the display, thus allowing for thinner bezels and a higher screen-to-body ratio.

Screen-to-body ratio up to 93% on the Mi MIX II

Xiaomi Mi MIX II is said to come with a screen-to-body ratio up to 93%, one of the highest on any smartphone on the market. The in-display technology can be integrated into AMOLED displays, even curved ones.

The original Xiaomi Mi MIX also came with a ceramic body and it didn’t actually have a gap for a speaker in the front. The speaker was hidden below the glass and it emitted vibrations so that users could listen to calls. The same technology could be incorporated in the new Mi MIX II.

The Mi MIX was announced last year and ran Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 SoC, clocked at 2.35GHz, and had 4GB of RAM with 128GB of memory. The Pro variant had 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, while battery capacity reached 4,400mAh and display size 6.4-inch with 1080 x 2040 pixel resolution. Rear camera capacity reached 16MP with a 5MP sensor in the front. The phone was first announced in China and made available to other countries a few months later.
