2K has just announced that there won't be another WWE series game this fiscal year. After releasing the controversial WWE 2K20, which was plagued by major issues, the publisher is taking a step back to better assess the future of the franchise.

Even though there won't be another WWE 2K simulation game in 2020, the publisher confirmed that it will extend the production timeline to ensure the development team at Visual Concepts can create a great game next year.

To improve the chance that the next WWE 2K simulation game won't be marred by so many technical issues, 2K hired Patrick Gilmore to serve as its new Executive Producer and lead Visual Concepts. He's a veteran of the gaming industry who's worked for major developers and publishers like Disney and Amazon.

Gilmore's name is closely related to games like Aladdin on Sega Genesis, Killer Instinct, Medal of Honor, and New World. Starting this month, he will oversee WWE 2K development and we should get more news about what's happening with the franchise in the coming months.

We want to ensure the development team at Visual Concepts can create a great game that will entertain grizzled WWE 2K veterans, as well as newcomers who want to climb through the ropes and step into the ring for the very first time.”

With WWE 2K series taking a sabbatical year, 2K has found another way to entertain fans of the franchise. WWE 2K Battlegrounds is the new game developed by Saber Interactive, the studio behind NBA 2K Playgrounds.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds features an arcade-style action and over-the-top Superstar designs, environments, and moves. It's aimed at both veterans and newcomers to the WWE 2K universe and it's slated for release this fall. 2K released a gameplay trailer that offers gamers a glimpse at what's this all about, but more details will be revealed in the coming months.
