Of course, it's shaped like a cheeseburger

This past Friday, the absolute largest cheese sculpture the world has ever seen was unveiled by The Melt, a San Francisco-based eatery chain. Tipping the scale at 1,524 pounds (691 kilograms), the sculpture was recognized as the world's biggest by Guinness World Records officials.

Impressive weight aside, the sculpture was also quite a sight. It stood about 45 inches (1.15 meters) tall and measured some 38 inches (0.96 meters) across.

The previous record was held by a cheese carving made by a woman named Sarah Kaufmann and unveiled in 2011 in Wisconsin. This former record holder, however, only weighed about 925 pounds (roughly 419 kilograms).

The mammoth sculpture showcased in Los Angeles towards the end of last week was made by artist Troy Landwehr from a single block of cheddar cheese. Apparently, it took him some 30 hours to create it.

Since the sculpture was created to mark National Cheeseburger Day, celebrated each year on September 18, it was shaped like a cheeseburger. The edible work of art even came complete with a pickle on top.

“The Melt added cheeseburgers to the menu in November 2014, and they have quickly become our most popular menu item,” Kerri Martin, vice president of marketing for The Melt, said in a statement.

“As we approached the one-year anniversary of the introduction of cheeseburgers we wanted to pay homage to all things deliciously cheesy - and put smiles on our fans' faces by breaking this record,” he went on to add.
