Cosmopolitan editor discovers being glamorous isn’t easy

A single look at Kylie Jenner’s Instagram page (assuming you don’t want to pay the subscription fee for her recently launched blog) and you get the impression that she does absolutely nothing all day but get glammed up, step out for “errands” and pose for pictures.

That is probably true, but as Cosmopolitan editor Brooke Shunatona found out, this doing nothing actually takes a lot of doing everything. Brooke lived Kylie’s life for an entire week, by the end of which she was completely exhausted.

Being Kylie Jenner isn’t exactly easy

The Kardashians (and celebrities in general) seem to lead an enchanted life: they’re always getting dolled up and dressed up in the finest designer clothes, they’re always looking their best because they’re at the center of attention non-stop, and they never seem to do any of the stuff us regular mortals have to do (like work, shop for groceries, you name it).

Kylie Jenner is only 18 but she has a huge following online: so huge that she’s coming dangerously close to besting sister Kim Kardashian. From her social media accounts, you’d think her life is reduced to chilling by the pool, showing off her new hairdos and expensive fashion / cars / jewelry, and doing that dreadful duck-face for the camera.

And it is, but at a great cost.

Brooke says only applying Kylie’s makeup took her at least an hour every day. Add to that the amount of time needed for the “perfect” selfie (anything from 5 to 15 minutes per picture), the fact that it was impossible for her to do anything for herself because of her long nails, and the time spent on social media, and you get a total of a regular working day.

Being Kylie Jenner is a full-time job. Kylie Jenner makes it appear as if it’s nothing, but few other women would probably be able to carry it out.

A draining experience

You can see some of Brooke’s challenges during this experiment in the video below. At the link above, you will find the detailed experience, complete with info on the clothing and the beauty products used.

For instance, Brooke wanted to stay true to Kylie and used her fake lashes from the Kardashian Beauty collection. Sticking them on with her fake nails proved to be the hardest part, and the editor is now convinced that Kylie doesn’t even button her own clothes or put on her own shoes.

That said, Brooke wouldn’t trade lives with Jenner.

“I was exhausted,” Brooke writes. “There is something very emotionally draining about investing so much energy in the way you look and deliberately putting yourself out there for people to judge. I’m not even remotely a celebrity and the experience was really weighing on my self-esteem. Because I’d put so much thought into my appearance, I cared that much more about what others would think of the way I looked, and that is something I never usually do. I wondered if this is how Kylie feels on a regular basis, except times a million because there’s so much pressure for women in entertainment to look good.”
