Redstone 2 coming April 11, Redstone 3 due in the fall

Microsoft will officially start the Windows 10 Creators Update rollout on April 11, and this is undoubtedly one key moment for both the company and its customers, as it’s the second major release after the Anniversary Update.

Many users, however, are wondering what is going to happen after the Creators Update goes live, especially because Microsoft has remained pretty much tight-lipped on its long-term plans for Windows 10, with no specifics provided whatsoever. With the Build conference taking place this spring, however, more such info is likely to emerge, though we already know a thing or two about what’s to come after that.

The next major release after the Creators Update (internally codenamed Redstone 2) is, naturally, Redstone 3. Work on Redstone 3 has already started behind the closed doors at Microsoft and the first builds have been spotted online, but nothing is official and no specifics are available.

Second update coming in the fall

What we do know, however, is that Microsoft’s strategy of shipping two different OS updates every year is still on the table, so in addition to the Creators Update, a second release should see daylight as well.

Codenamed Redstone 3, the next update for Windows 10 is expected to debut in the fall and although little is known at this point, there are rumors indicating that Microsoft is working on a new shell, as well as on a visual makeover called Project NEON.

Our sources said Microsoft planned to compile Windows 10 Redstone 3 as version 1711, which means it could go live in November, but it’s obviously too early to discuss the ETA.

On the other hand, the first builds for insiders are likely to ship shortly after the Creators Update goes live, but obviously, no big changes will be included at first. More substantial improvements are expected in the summer when Project NEON apps are also projected to see daylight.
