Only PWA-compatible platforms will be supported

Windows Phones are going extinct these days, and as a result, developers one by one leave Microsoft’s mobile push behind in order to concentrate on the platforms that users are most committed to.

Twitter is joining the growing group of devs waving goodbye to Windows phones, as the company announced recently that its Progressive Web App for Windows would only run on the Fall Creators Update and April 2018 Update.

In other words, starting June 1, its legacy apps will no longer work on Windows Phone 7, Windows Phone 8, Windows Phone 8.1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 Mobile versions 1703 and earlier, and Windows 10 for PCs version 1703 or earlier, as reported by Neowin.

Windows 10 Mobile currently in maintenance mode

In an announcement on the company’s blog, Twitter says its new Windows app has been specifically optimized for the April 2018 Update, adding that customers of older Windows versions are recommended to either switch to the web-based version or upgrade to Windows 10.

“We encourage everyone to update the Windows app as soon as you update your OS as previous versions will no longer be available for download starting today and no longer supported starting June 1st.  If you’re running Windows 8.1 or below, you can access the latest update by updating to Windows 10 or through twitter.com in your browser to continue enjoying the full Twitter experience,” Twitter says.

Microsoft itself is no longer committed to Windows phones, and the company confirmed late last year that no new features and devices were planned for the platform.

Windows 10 Mobile is currently in maintenance mode, and this means that only security fixes would continue to be provided until mid-2019 when it officially reaches the end-of-support and it’s completely retired.

Without a doubt, Twitter won’t be the last company waving goodbye to Windows phones, and by the time the end-of-support is announced, more developers will likely pull their apps and focus on Android and iOS exclusively.
