Microsoft previously said that it planned to release Windows 10 Mobile for existing Windows Phone devices in December, but according to a new report, the company has since changed its mind and pushed back the rollout to early 2016.

Only little is known at this point, but December no longer seems to be the target month for the release of Windows 10 Mobile for Windows Phone devices, as Microsoft wants more time to fix the found bugs and improve compatibility with the existing handsets.

"This November we introduced Windows 10 to phones including brand new features such as Continuum and Universal Windows Apps with the introduction of the Lumia 950 and 950 XL. The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones,” a company spokesperson is quoted as saying by ZDNet.

Windows 10 Mobile “RTM” is ready

While Microsoft is still hard at work to get Windows 10 Mobile ready for Windows Phone devices, it's believed that the RTM version of the operating system has already been completed in November.

Windows 10 Mobile RTM is believed to be build 10586 and is currently available not only for insiders enrolled in the testing program but also for buyers of Lumia 950 and 950 XL, both models coming with this OS version pre-installed.

Microsoft plans to use the remaining weeks until the release of Windows 10 Mobile to thoroughly test the operating system on Windows Phone devices and fix any bugs that might be experienced by upgraders. There still are no details on which phones are expected to get the upgrade in the first wave or whether the company plans to release Windows 10 Mobile for all devices at the same time.

For the moment, it's pretty clear that the easiest way to get Windows 10 Mobile on a Windows Phone device is by registering for the Windows Insider program, but keep in mind that bugs and performance issues are very likely to be experienced on such builds.
