Custom ROMs have been around for a while on Android, and plenty of hardcore users turned to them because they wanted to unlock certain features, get new ones, and remove pre-installed apps. Starting today, Windows Phone users can do the same, albeit in a more restrictive way.

WindowsMania.pl has published the very first custom ROM for a Windows Phone device that allows users to bring some modifications to their Lumia 625 and benefit from a few new features.

First and foremost, it’s worth mentioning that this custom ROM is only available for Lumia 625, so no other Windows Phone handset can install it for the moment. But it’s clearly just the beginning, and more ROMs for other models are likely to follow in the near future.

Included changes

Also, the number of changes that it brings on Lumia 625 units installing the custom ROM is not at all breathtaking, but again, these are just the first steps the platform takes towards a world of third-party modifications, so give it some time and more tweaks should definitely follow.

The custom ROM updates the Lumia 625 to Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 and removes all third-party apps that might be installed by your carrier. This is clearly good news for users who like stock Windows Phone.

Since the guys who built the custom ROM are Polish, the offering also includes a Polish dictionary and speech pack while also bringing interop unlocking, preventing further changes even after you upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile. This means the device can be used in any network no matter if you factory-reset the phone or install Microsoft’s new operating system.

At the same time, the custom ROM also changes the accent color and comes with some other visual modifications across the operating system.

Keep in mind that installing a custom ROM can void your warranty and brick your device, so don’t try it unless you know exactly what you're doing.
