Windows Phone is said to have a market share of around 3 percent worldwide right now, but stats show that it’s experiencing a terrific success in some specific countries, including Russia.

A new report coming from local media indicates that Windows Phone managed to increase its sales in Russia for the first five months of this year by no less than 106 percent, which is clearly a significant achievement for Microsoft, which managed to sell 690,000 phones during the period.

This represents 8 percent of all total smartphone sales in Russia in January – May 2015 and Russian press claims that it was all possible thanks to budget models such as Lumia 530, 535, and 630.

Statistics show that Windows Phone owns 9 percent of the budget phone market, so it’s pretty clear that Microsoft’s strategy of focusing on affordable phone models that would help gain market share is paying off quickly in some specific markets, including Russia.

Where’s Android?

As far as the other mobile platforms are concerned, Android is obviously number one with sales that account for 85 percent of all shipments during the first five months of the year. A total of 8.2 million phones running Android were sold, which is nearly 12 times more than Windows Phone.

iPhone sales, on the other hand, dropped from 10 percent to 7 percent, so Windows Phone actually sold more units during the period. The iPhone, however, remains the second most-used operating system in Russia with a share of 27 percent.

Android sales haven’t changed from the previous year, but its market position is still secure thanks to its impressive share in the country, so these rankings are unlikely to change in the coming months, despite the arrival of Windows 10 Mobile scheduled to take place in late 2015.
